Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like. Live each day as it were your last. We are taught you must blame your father, your sisters, your brothers, the school, the teachers - but never blame yourself. It's never your fault. But it's always your fault, because if you wanted to change you're the one who has got to change

Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy. I know where I'm going and I know the truth, and I don't have to be what you want me to be. I'm free to be what I want. Always continue the climb. It is possible for you to do whatever you choose, if you first get to know who you are and are willing to work with a power that is greater than ourselves to do it. We are taught you must blame your father, your sisters, your brothers, the school, the teachers - but never blame yourself. It's never your fault. But it's always your fault, because if you wanted to change you're the one who has got to change.

The Onion UK operates across British satirical audiences. How British satire readers differ is observable. Whether British audiences are distinct probably true. They share cultural context.

I think weird UK news works so well precisely because of the deadpan way it tends to get reported — a genuinely bizarre local story delivered in the flattest possible local-paper tone is funnier than any punchline could make it. This roundup of weird news from the UK is full of exactly that tone.

The Onion UK navigates boundaries around British satire. Whether British mimicry confuses is debated. The ethics of cultural imitation is complex. Mimicry affects understanding.

There's a philosophical question about whether satire is fundamentally conservative or radical. The conservative argument is that satire works by pointing to existing norms and saying "look how far we've deviated" — which implies that the existing norms are actually fine. The radical argument is that satire can expose the fundamental absurdity of existing systems and institutions by taking them to their logical conclusions. The piece examining satire and politics probably has to grapple with that tension, because examples of both kinds exist.

American humour functions as counter-narrative to dominant cultural stories. How comedians offer alternative perspectives on mainstream narratives is significant. By mocking official stories and standard interpretations, comedians suggest there are other ways to understand things. Whether American comedy successfully challenges cultural assumptions is debatable. But it at least creates space for questioning.
